Uranium poem by Janet Kuypers

Uranium

Janet Kuypers

from the “ Periodic Table of Poetry” series

The sun really is an explosive thing.
With primarily hydrogen,
reacting with helium, carbon,
nitrogen and oxygen,
we can think of hydrogen bombs
and understand why the sun
has been able to keep us so warm
at such a far distance for so long.
But because we’ve got a powerhouse
at the center of our solar system,
our sun can even support
the heavier elements,
like gold or Uranium.

With the element Uranium named
after the planet Uranus,
the only planet named
after Greek mythology
for the god of the sky,
it’s aqua blue hue matches the sky
from it’s methane atmosphere…
Fluctuating seasons
from it’s 97 degree axis tilt,
this potentially dangerous planet
matches the metal element’s
danger to us here on earth.
So yeah, it makes sense
tat we use elements
like Uranium or Hydrogen,
elements the sun feeds off of,
to cause so much destruction
so close to home.

From hydrogen bombs
to the U.S. and the U.S.S.R
and third world countries looking
for Uranium for nuclear bombs,
even to depleted Uranium
as military ammunition
in “high-density penetrators”,
we’ll still look for ways to kill each other
with the elements at our disposal.

###

Wondering why our planet
has suffered mass extinctions
every 26 billion years or so,
with upwards of five extinctions
in this planet’s history
from dinosaurs to reptiles
to 96 percent of marine life
at one mass extinction event,
scientists can only guess
that comets traveling through space
caused these mass extinctions,
but no one knows for sure.

But some scientists theorized
that if comets have have long orbits,
hundreds of years,
Than a twin star to our sun
can have one even more immense.
Imagine our sun actually having
an undetected companion star
in a highly elliptical orbit…
They’ve called this as-of-yet
undetected red dwarf “Nemesis”.
And it would be our nemesis,
with an orbit so large, it would
periodically send comets
from the Oort cloud
into the inner Solar System
say, every 26 million years.

And it’s funny to think,
that if this were true,
this “Death Star” theory,
our “Nemesis”, this red dwarf star,
would travel through space,
but still be so undetectable to us,
because it’s wouldn’t even have the energy
to hold on to those heavy elements
like Uranium.
And even if this “Nemesis”
was a brown dwarf star,
it would then even be too low in mass
to even sustain hydrogen fusion.
But still, with just the right orbit,
it could send smaller
comet soldiers our way,
to let the little infantrymen
help do us in.

So, as I said before,
we’ll keep pointing our telescopes
to the night sky,
trying to keep ourselves safe
beyond our global borders,
while we use these same elements
like Uranium,
so we can threaten each other
out of existence,
in our little skirmishes
right here on earth.

Spirit Heroes On the Wall Poem by Dandelion De La Rue

Spirit Heroes on the Wall

Another hero

dead and gone

200 years

before I met him

met his gaze

a portrait on

the museum wall

his eyes

so bold

so sad.

Do I know you

Juan Jose?

I feel as though I

know you

very well.

Have I met

your restless spirit

in a dream?

Dead heroes sometimes

come and go

or so they say

surprising those who

thought them

ordinary.

Appearing, and then

disappearing

back into the mists.

If once I knew you

Juan Jose,

I hope that

I was brave enough

to be your friend.

Juan Jose Rondon, is the guys name, the one who I THINK the picture is of.  I googled him and everything is in Spanish, but I THINK he was in a calvary, for the rebels (Bolivar, trying to get rid of Spain).  He’d originally been Venezuelan, son of slaves, and joined the Spanish army, but didn’t like the Spanish, thought they were cruel, so he took off and joined the rebels in Colombia.  Anyway, Bolivar was losing a big battle, and all would be lost, when Juan Jose said, why haven’t you asked us to help?  and Bolivar said, “Go then, and save the country!”  So Juan Jose yelled “Those who are brave, follow me!”  and 9 guys followed him, and they won, and saved the day for the good guys.  I think before the battle, he and his friends were taking care of the horses or something.

Wounded Bird Poem by Andy Derryberry

a wounded bird is in the road
it is very much alive
but obviously injured
there is blood

a car stops and a man gets out
his intent to remove a nuisance
but the bird is alive
flailing and chirping pitifully

what a pretty bird
and such a shame
people these days just don’t care
someone hit it on purpose i think

the bird flails weakly and pitifully
as if to say why have i been treated this way?
why is the world so cruel
i would live for a moment of sympathy

the man turns on the emergency blinkers
crumbles up some crackers he has
pours a little water into a bottle cap
the bird eats and actually sings a little

encouraged the man thinks
i can save this bird
life has been bad for the poor creature
but perhaps i can make things better

already late for work the man
calls in sick
and then studies how to care
for the wounded bird in the road

well it can’t stay here
it will only get run over again
by the cruel, indifferent,
mean-spirited world

the bird seems appreciative and
sings and chirps warmly
the eyes are brighter and the
flailing less desperate

ok i’ve fed you a little
and you seem to feel better
now is a good time
to get out of the road

there is, luckily, a cardboard box
in the car, perfect for the bird
he takes his scarf and stuffs
the box to make it comfortable

he cautiously approaches and
the bird seems calm,
still seemingly bright eyed
and appreciative

he must kneel down close
being careful to do no additional harm
gathering the wings just enough
to ease the bird from the pavement

his face is close by necessity
and the bird suddenly pecks furiously
poking the man’s nose hard
finding his left eye

there is blood, his blood
he drops the bird roughly
and it flails as before
he staggers awkwardly backward

he wipes the blood from his face
his eye isn’t injured badly but
the blood blinds it
so that he doesn’t know

he knocks over the water bottle
and crushes the crackers
he staggers to the car
and spins the tires getting away

all the while cursing the
wounded bird to perdition and
denouncing himself for his naive
kindness and for being deceived

the wounded bird is in the road
it is very much alive
but obviously injured
there is blood

a car stops and a man gets out
his intent to remove a nuisance
but the bird is alive
flailing and chirping pitifully

what a pretty bird
and such a shame
people these days just don’t care
someone hit it on purpose i think

i can save this bird
life has been bad for the poor creature
but perhaps i can make things better

the bird seems appreciative and
sings and chirps warmly

The water falls in droplets and
lays in pools before
falling again or flowing down
to the sea
but you already know that.
The water feels like rain on my skin
and the water flows
over you also to the sea.
The mermaids sing to me
from the water
they sing of praise and hopes for
my journey
but you may already know them
sitting on the rocks
combing their hair
calling to me

My Grandfather Poem by Andy Derryberry

my grandfather
i smelled my grandfather
this morning in the
sweat soaked gloves
i use on the dumbbells

i remember him as sad
because the love of his live
died young, in childbirth

i wish he could have
found some happiness
to share with me

but i guess some wounds
just won’t heal…
still i was just a kid

but today is a gift to me
and as long as i draw breath
i’m going to live live live
