Once poem

Once
ByDonald Wayne Jackson
listen to mp3at least once

Once I had what you might call
a noble spirit
but I druggedit and worked it
down, anddragged it through
terriblestreets at dawn
night afternight.
It was durableand lonely,
It was
what I wantedto be.
It
was real.
I remembermost its intelligence and innocence
Boy oh Boy!

And when itwasn't me
doing it to me
it wassometimes the people, no
not thepeople, but the companies
patting myback, feeding
the wrongthing. I
was a gooddog, I
waggled likehell
and fell overand over, I
just couldn'tlearn.
But what Idid, I did well,
better thanmost and then, fell
and learn torage and rage
and take it.
And sometimes
when it wasn'tme
(and mostly itwas me)
I loved thewrong woman,
or the wrongboots
or the wrongideas
or the wrong
road,
to just bungleon through.
I need afrontal lobotomy
or the longsleep,
or even atough justice,
a warm noonsun.
Come by andsee me.
