Bloodlines serves as a revo poetry with music data stream treating a nation like an organ, a continent like a body and the globe like soul. An uncut splurge of visual metaphors forged into recited poetry, ‘some singing’ and fast paced rhythmic rap in fusion with Ghana’s Ebo Taylor and Alhaji K. Frimpong’s highlife chops cooked by ProdbyYungFly and Drumnayshin(who mixed and mastered all the pieces except Woyaaya), live taps by Burkinabe genius Lasso, alternative EDM influenced tapes from Euiv’s Baltimore den and afro house plugs from South African sounds king Mo Laudi by way of Paris. The themes are one and all – based on blessing of earth, water, wind and fire. The artist rants out some social commentary concerning black world modern slavery, water pollution, illegal mining and plastic waste. Also, there’s some folk storytelling and groovy wordplay pieces in there.

Candice James is a poet, writer, visual artist, musician, singer-songwriter in her 2nd three year term as Poet Laureate of New Westminster, She is Royal City Literary Arts Society Director and founder and Past President of both Royal City Literary Arts Society and Federation BC Writers; She is also founder of Poetry In The Park and founder of Poetic Justice. She is a featured poet, keynote speaker, workshop facilitator, presenter and event hostess. Candice is also a full member of League Canadian Poets; a member of The Writers Union Canada and is the author of nine poetry books: the first book of poetry published was “A Split In The Water” (Fiddlehead Poetry Books 1979); and the most recent is “Merging Dimensions” (Ekstasis Editions 2015). RICARDO’S FATHER. A Poem by John Grey

Hair crowded his body:

facial hair, chest hair,

hair through the back of his hands.

He was always a frozen transformation scene

from “The Wolf-Man.”

He had so little skin.

How do you love a man

who sprouts more than he towers,

like loving Renoir for the paint

Bergman for the celluloid.
 

My own father

would shave in the morning

and be done with it.

Hair was easily contained.

I could make connection

between his cheeks and mouth arid chin..

His chest was brown and clear

from working in the sun.

And I could see the strength in his hands,

felt what lifted me.
 

Ricardo confided in me

that his father could not find work,

and I figured it was because

no one would ever hire such a jungle.

He added that his parents were separated,

Once again, how do you love

the camouflaged man?

He said he saw him just on weekends,

looked forward to

those bright, sunny Saturdays.

He spoke of razors of warmth and light.

A FEW PLACES OF INTEREST. A Poem by Marc Carver

1.
As I walk over the bridge
city on my right
I see a man staring into a woman’s eyes
when I look again
I see how old he is
and how young she is.
There must be twenty five years between them
but it could be a hundred
for all he cares.
 
2.
In the national theatre
I look at a young woman as she sits down
she spits on her phone
then rubs her finger around the screen.
 
Then she starts to comb her hair
right to the tips as she twists it at the end
then she starts to talk to her hair.
 
Perhaps she is annoyed with it
having a bad hair day.
 
Then a man sits next to her
too close for it to be mean anything else than they are together.
Then they get up and walk off
without ever having said a word to each other.
 
3.
In the south bank I go and sit in on a talk.
It is about Hayden and a bit about Handel.
One of the women on the panel is a dyke
but the other is hot.
I look at her a lot.
The last is a man, academic, American.
 
The man talks about the genius of Hayden
and the women talks about why he was not as revered as Mozart.
The man tries to defend him
The dyke says she has read his diaries
and gives us some examples.
He was boring and that is all it comes down to.
A genius can be many things
but he can never be boring.
Look at Mozart.

Sometimes I don’t write for a few days and it feels okay but after a few more it doesn’t feel right at all. So I start to look for things and get out of the house more and there they are. Just waiting for me all along.

Defiant. A Poem by Ken Allan Dronsfield.

Life’s challenges always squeezing

temperamental vows of enumeration

careless whispers voiced upon a star

blasphemous scripture of the defiant.

Gallant of breadth on a black stallion

brevity and valor born of the cutlass

an exultation within a remembrance

of glorious red roses dead on a vine.

A flickering flame of the iced candle

life within a waxed obtuse blessing

old shoes silent on that coolish night

must tread lightly upon blue stardust.

Janet Kuypers 1

Janet Kuypers is a professional performance artist, awriter, art director, webmaster and photographer.
 
She has had over 70 books published and close to 40 audio CD sets released, and is published in books, magazines and on the internet around thousands of times for her writing and art work in her professional career, profiled in such magazines as Nation and Discover U,where she won the award as Poetry Ambassador and was nominated as Poet of the Year. She has also been highlighted on radio stations, and has appeared on television for poetry repeatedly.
 
She turned her writing into performance art on her own and together with musical groups, and ran a monthly Podcast of her work for years, as well mixed JK Radio — an Internet radio station — into Scars Internet Radio (radio stations which ran between 2005-2009). She ran the Chaotic Radio show through BZoO.org and chaoticarts.org (2006-2007). She has performed spoken word and music across the country – in the spring of 1998 she embarked on a national poetry tour, with featured performances, among other venues, at the Albuquerque Spoken Word Festival during the National Poetry Slam; her bands have had concerts in Chicago and in Alaska; in 2003 she hosted and performed at a weekly poetry and music open mike (called Sing Your Life), and from 2002 through 2005 performed quarterly performance art. Since 2010 Janet Kuypers has also hosted the weekly Chicago poetry open mic at the Cafe (http://www.chaoticarts.org/thecafe), where she also runs a weekly poetry podcast.

To all you guys
dat got hitched on da rebound
 
 
take some worthwhile advice—
 
 
Blood is thickah den watah
if you not da faddah of da kids.
 
 

It doesn’t mattah
if dey young or oldah
 
 
she going defend dem
like wun mama lion
 
 
wit teeth and claws exposed.
 
 

If you taught
you wuz numbah one in her life
 
 
you got anadah ting coming.
 
 

Da maternal urge
going trump your opinion
 
 
every day of da week.
 
 

No sense get frustrated
and make tings moa worse
 
 
cause you going only lose in da end.
 
 

Dat wedding band of yours
 
 
going be in da pawn shop
before you know it
 
 
and you going be in wun apartment
while she gets da house.

 
 
No try grab wun greased pole
and tink you going win da debate
 
 
cause da situation going drive you crazy
and out da door.
 
 

It would be wise
to listen to dis warning—
 
 
If you like stay married
 
 
just accept dat you are numbah 2
